Tips for a Successful HoCo Proposal
Of course, you want the person you ask to the dance to say “yes”. While it’s no guarantee. Here are some ideas to help create the best homecoming proposal outcome.
Start With A Theme
You’ve probably had to do a brainstorming sesh in one of your classes at school. Remember, don’t think hard just quickly write as many words as possible that remind you of the person you want to ask to the homecoming dance.
Grab a paper and pen and let’s get some HoCo proposal ideas.
Here are some prompts to get you started:
- Do they like music? What kind? Favorite song? Favorite singer?
- Are they into art?
- Do they play a sport?
- Are they funny or serious?
- Are they a good student? Love books? Science? History? Math?
- What’s their favorite movie?
- Favorite foods?
- Are they animal lovers?
- What other hobbies do they have?
- Inside jokes?
- Shared memories to riff on?
- Favorite meme?
When using the theme you’ve chosen. Pick words and create puns to match your theme. If you don’t know any, Google is your friend. Just ask – “What terms are used in …”. This tip will work with any of the themes.
Make Your Hoco Proposal Unique
While it’s fun to look at the ideas I’ve included. Try to use these as springboards to inspire you.
Combine ideas, give it a little twist, and change it up to match both your personality and the person you’re asking. It doesn’t have to be exact and it doesn’t have to be perfect.
It just needs to be you!
⚠️⚠️ While it may sound old-fashioned and prudish, think before you choose a phrase that is in any way offensive. I was shocked at some of the terrible poster ideas I came across writing this. I used to have a saying with my kids when they were younger but it still applies.
” There is a difference between funny and fresh.”
⚠️⚠️No matter their sense of humor or personality, I don’t think any girl – (or her parents) would want to receive or accept a hoco proposal that was rude, mean, or threatening. JUST DON’T DO IT. Also, I hope it goes without saying, the ones that are fake to embarrass someone are also not a good idea.
Add Props to Your Proposal
Find props or small gifts that go with your theme. Food, costumes, balloons, or flowers can be add-ons to almost anything with color matching.
Pick a Place
Will this be at school? During a sporting event? At their home?
Keep in mind the type of person they are, not just you. You might like the attention of a public proposal but that’s not for everyone.
Prepare and Practice
Don’t wait until the last minute. They could already have a date. Also, no one wants to feel like you rushed and don’t care.
It doesn’t have to be perfect. Find a balance between the two. If it involves speaking practice in front of the mirror, your family, or your pet a few times.
Ask Away
They may say yes, or they may say no, but you’ll have no idea if you never ask.
Show or Movie Hoco Proposal Ideas
Using their favorite movie or maybe it was your first date is a great way to tie in your homecoming proposal.
Hoco Proposal Ideas For Foodies
Does she love sweets? Is he always getting Chick-fil-A? Show how well you know them by pairing their favorite food with your homecoming proposal. Attach bags of candy to the poster, create bouquets, or use its original box for your proposal message – like pizza boxes or donut boxes.
Hoco Proposals For Sports Fans
Sports fans or athletes will appreciate a proposal that matches their favorite sport. Use words that go with their favorite game or team.
Hoco Proposal Ideas for Music Lovers
Maybe they’re part of a band, the chorus, or into musicals. Perhaps they’re a Swiftie or you just want to do a music HoCo proposal using your song as a couple.
HoCo Proposal Ideas with Animals
Who can resist when the proposal comes from a dog?
Hoco Proposals To Ask Your Best Friend

More Hoco Proposal Ideas That Aren’t Posters
Not all dance proposals need to use a poster. Or at school.
Some people are shy and don’t like attention. Whether that’s you or the person you want to invite to hoco, you should keep it in mind. The last thing you want is a homecoming proposal gone wrong.
Here are some fun ways to ask someone to the homecoming dance that doesn’t involve any public display that might be embarrassing. These can be done as quiet moments at home, on a date, or even during school but don’t bring tons of attention.
- Video
Make a video and send it privately. You could practice a proposal, read a poem, or sing a song. Create a slide show using pictures of the two of you set to your song or their favorite one.
- Gift Boxes
You can have a mini proposal poster inside, a poem, a book, or other favorite item. It doesn’t have to be expensive, just thoughtful.
- Say It With Flowers
Flowers are a great way to express your feelings. Attach a card with your HoCo proposal. Bring them yourself or have them delivered. Despite what anyone tells you, roses aren’t always a girl’s favorite – find out their favorite flower or their favorite color.
- Poems
Are you a writer or do they love poetry? Are you creative? Use a poem already known and make it your own with a bit of a twist.
- Songs
Can you sing? Even if you can’t are you brave? Their favorite song or a parody of a current one can make a great hoco proposal.
- Pet Proposals
Using your pet or theirs is a surefire way to their heart. Dogs are generally more cooperative than cats. Test out your idea first with this one before Fido eats your props or Fluffy runs away. But don’t forget horses, goats, or any other animals that might be a part of their lives.
So there you have it. Lots of ways to ask your favorite person to the Homecoming Dance.
