🧊 Freezer Tips for Soup Success
If you’re planning to stock your own freezer or share a soup with someone else, here are a few tried-and-true tips to make sure it freezes, thaws, and reheats like a charm:
🥣 Let It Cool First
Before freezing, always let soup cool completely to avoid ice crystals or condensation that can mess with the texture. You can even refrigerate it overnight first if you’re short on time.
🛍 Use the Right Containers
Soups freeze best in:
- Freezer bags (lay flat for easy stacking)
- Plastic or glass containers (leave an inch or two for expansion)
- Souper Cubes (for portioned reheating—great for lunch sizes)
Label with the name and date so you’re not playing mystery soup roulette later.
🍚 Skip the Pasta & Rice (Sometimes)
If the recipe includes pasta or rice, consider freezing it without and cooking fresh when reheating. Some soups do fine (barley and wild rice tend to hold up), but others get mushy.
🧀 Add Dairy Later
Cream-based soups freeze best when you add cream, milk, or cheese after reheating. That said, many of the recipes in this list include dairy and still do just fine—just give them a good stir after thawing.
🔥 Reheat Gently
Soups are best reheated on the stovetop over medium heat or in the microwave at 50% power in short intervals. Stir frequently to keep creamy soups from separating.
